Fishermen’s Friends

Nissan Patrol 160 | Catch of the day

Flag OmanBefore reading this story, please make sure to read the story called Fishermen’s Friends.

Most seafood restaurants have catch of the day on their menu: a special fish out of the many fish caught last night, served fresh. Drive-by Snapshots is not a seafood restaurant but a blog covering automotive topics – and the menu changes daily.

Toyota Corolla E100 Kakimoto Racing, Muscat, Oman | Drive-by Snapshots by Sebastian Motsch (2015)

Kakimoto Racing Toyota Corolla E100

Flag OmanWhile wandering about near the Sultans’ Palace in Muscat, Oman, we spotted something we didn’t expect at all in this part of the world. Now who would ever look twice at an E100 series Toyota Corolla? Yeah, right. Nobody would. But because this particular vehicle wasn’t painted white and sitting there sporting not only a mild stance but also a perfectly fitting exhaust tip, we casually took a second look. This really is a nice, understated daily driver that could paint a smile or even a big grin on your face while commuting to work.

Audi 100 Avant C3 Norway 2014 | Drive-by Snapshots by Sebastian Motsch (2014)

Well then… here we go again!

Flag NorwayAfter a week of posting yellow and blue vehicles – the posting blues hit me, quite literally. But now, quite a few business trips later I’m back with more Drive-by Snapshots for you to enjoy!

Let’s start things off with something you don’t see often on the roads these days. This particular Audi 100 Avant looks like it has seen better days. But mind you – the chaps driving it now sure have more fun with it than they could ever have in a bone-stock C3. You  might want to call it blasphemy… but actually it is quite clever to give this exact vehicle the rat look treatment, with plenty of surface rust. Corrosion on a C3 Audi? You must be kidding! Didn’t Audi make a big fuss about their cars being 100% galvanized? Only to sneakily omit it on the next generation (C4) without telling anyone about it. Oh… you just gotta love the irony 🙂

Yellow and Blue | Day seven

While digging through my picture archives, I became aware of having many pictures that have one thing in common: matching color schemes. It really is interesting how some color combinations can be found whichever country you go to. This week I’m going to feature a selection of pictures containing the bright colors Yellow & Blue.

Toyota Carina TA20 | Gatebil Rudskogen

“Everyone says Toyota is the best company in the world, but the customer doesn’t care about the world. They care if we are the best in town, or not. That’s what I want to be.”   Akio Toyoda

Mr. Toyoda-san was proven right in 1979 when a customer decided to buy the best car in town. He or she could have chosen something entirely else, but for some reason or another this plain white 2-door Toyota Carina TA20 got picked.

Wonder-Forest Cadillac Gatebil Rudskogen 2014 | Drive-by Snapshots by Sebastian Motsch (2014)

A new WUNDER-BAUM® scent coming soon | #BecauseGatebil

Flag NorwayThe WUNDER-BAUM® was invented in 1952 and has been produced in huge quantities ever since. Under normal circumstances, the tree-shaped air-freshener is a lonely fellow. He prefers to lead a solitary life, enjoying the panoramic view from its natural habitat – the rear-view mirror.

However, some of the little trees are members of a secret organization. They gather once a year to hold their annual meeting, called WUNDER-FOREST®. In 2014, they attended the Gatebil festival in Rudskogen, Norway. If you looked closely, you might have noticed that the trees held small-group workshops in various vehicles around the track, dangling from the rear-view mirrors of various cars.

Autobianchi Giardiniera | Swartskog Kolonial

Flag NorwaySoon after finding a moment of piece with an adorable MG TF, the tarmac turned into a gravel road, which ended at the Roald Amundsen Vei. Instead of turning left, we decided to follow the signs to Roald Amundsens Hjem. Halfway there we found something we never expected to see in rural Norway, but rather somewhere south of the Alps.

MG TF | A moment of piece at the Oslofjord

Flag Norway“Take a moment every day to find peace. Pull over to the side of the road, turn off the radio, and find peace.”   Richard Simmons

Well, it looks like this quote pretty much nails what the owner of this two-tone green MG TF did.
Fortunately for me as a photographer, he choose a very scenic spot overlooking the Oslofjord.

Citroen 2CV Chopped Duck | Drive-by Snapshots by Sebastian Motsch (2014)

Citroën 2CV | Chopped Duck Sweet & Sour

Flag GermanyA hot summer day in 2014. Heading towards the Nürburgring for the annual Oldtimer Grand Prix, we decided to stop at a rest area to buy refreshments. The petrol station was filled to the brim with travelers, their (mostly humdrum) cars, and a couple of trucks for good measure. But there is always a nugget to be found somewhere, if you just look hard enough. Actually, we didn’t really have to look hard, because the nugget occupied one of the prime spots. The owner and his friend just wanted to leave, but happily stopped and agreed to answer some questions and let me take a few pictures. Thank you, guys!

Volvo + cool = Voolvo?

Flag NorwayAfter showing you a selection of the cool Volvos found at Gatebil 2014 and featuring Christians’ 960 wagon, a question kept popping up: what exactly makes a Volvo cool? And if you managed to make it cool… do you have to call it a Voolvo? Let’s try to figure out the recipe for Volvo coolness!

Gatebil Rudskogen 2014 Volvo | Drive-by Snapshots by Sebastian Motsch (2014)

Who said Volvos ain’t cool?

Flag NorwayIs a Volvo a cool car? By the common perception of most people… err… no. In all the countries I have previously lived in or traveled to, Volvos are not exactly considered to be cool rides. However, traveling to Norway for the first time (and to Gatebil Rudskogen nonetheless) changed a thing or two – forever. Being a lover of cars with straight lines and timeless design, I have always appreciated the styling of RWD Volvos. But did I consider them to be cool? Nope. However, seeing what can be achieved even without a major budget, did spark a new interest.

Some are hiding behind a camo net…

Flag Norway… and others are more easy to spot and take pictures of. OK, I admit that the stunning BMW E30 M3 I posted yesterday set the bar very high. Nonetheless, here is a selection of Munichs’ finest for you to enjoy. Let’s start with a pair of unmolested classics we found in Tomter, en route to the Gatebil event location.

Mercedes-Benz W110 | German Smørrebrød

Flag NorwayJudging by the previous posts this week, one could be under the impression that our visit to Gatebil Rudskogen was all about classic Volvos. Hell no! There was so much more to see! You walk around a corner, all the time expecting to see souped-up drift cars or a mad Amazon. Walking along the go-kart track had many a surprise to be discovered, like this old Mercedes-Benz W110. The sun played wonderful games with the green paint and chrome, but the personal touches of the owner are what made it really special.
